What is Gabion and Reno Mattress?

Gabion is a box or cage filled with rocks, concrete, or sometimes sand and soil, usually made from wire mesh. Gabions are used in civil engineering, road building, military applications, and landscaping for erosion control, retaining walls, and shoreline protection. The wire mesh containers are flexible, permeable, and strong enough to withstand high levels of stress, which allows them to stabilize and protect slopes from erosion, support foundations, and retain soil on steep surfaces. The structure of gabions allows them to absorb and dissipate energy from flowing water and wind, making them particularly effective in flood control and stormwater management.

Reno mattresses, also known as rock mattresses or revet mattresses, are a type of gabion constructed in a flatter and wider rectangular shape. They are made from steel wire mesh and filled with stones, primarily used to protect slopes and embankments from erosion. Reno mattresses are laid flat on the ground, covering large areas to prevent soil erosion from water flows, stabilize riverbanks, and protect against wave action. Due to their lower profile compared to traditional gabions, reno mattresses are particularly useful in applications where a less obtrusive, yet effective, erosion control solution is needed, such as in channel linings, slope stabilization, and erosion protection of riverbanks and waterways.

What are the Differences and Similarities between Gabion and Reno Mattress?

  • Purpose: Both gabions and reno mattresses are used for erosion control, stabilization, and protection of soil. Gabions are more suited for structural retaining walls and deep erosion protection, while reno mattresses are used for surface erosion control over larger areas.
  • Design and Structure: Gabions are typically more cubic or box-shaped and used where structural support is needed. Reno mattresses are flatter and broader, designed for areas requiring surface protection against erosion.
  • Application: While both can be used in a variety of water management and landscaping projects, the choice between a gabion and a reno mattress depends on the specific requirements of the project, such as the needed height of the structure, the area to be covered, and the level of water flow or erosion to be managed.

Together, gabions and reno mattresses offer flexible, durable, and natural-looking solutions for a wide range of environmental and engineering challenges, contributing to the protection and stabilization of landscapes and waterways.

What are the Application of Gabion and Reno Mattress?

  • Retaining Walls: Gabions are commonly used to build gravity retaining walls for slope stabilization in residential areas, along roads, near water bodies, and on slopes.
  • Erosion Control: They are an effective solution for preventing soil erosion on riverbanks, coastlines, and streambanks. They absorb the energy of flowing water and spread it out.
  • Bridge Abutments: Gabions support and protect bridge abutments. They absorb and redirect the force of moving water, preventing erosion and undermining.
  • Noise Barriers: Filled with stones, gabions reduce noise pollution along highways and in industrial areas. They act as sound barriers.
  • Architectural Features: Because they look nice, gabions are used in architectural and landscaping projects. You can make benches, garden walls, and other decorative structures with them.
  • Flood Management: Gabions are used to build barriers for flood control, manage water flow, and protect areas that flood.
  • Riverbank Protection: Reno mattresses are used to protect riverbanks and streambeds from erosion. They stabilize the banks and help vegetation grow.
  • Channel Linings: They line drainage channels to slow down the water and prevent erosion.
  • Slope Stabilization: Reno mattresses placed on slopes prevent soil erosion from rainwater and surface runoff. This keeps the slope intact.
  • Weir and Check Dam Construction: Reno mattresses are used to build weirs and check dams in small-scale water management projects. They help control water flow and capture sediment.
  • Coastal Defense: Reno mattresses protect coastlines from wave action, erosion, and land loss.

Gabion

Gabion are used for a wide variety of retaining wall structures. Their versatile sizes allow the design of many different wall sections to suit the architectural demands of a project as well as its engineering requirements.

Gabions may be used for gravity retaining walls, reinforced soil retaining walls and low-height landscaping walls.

Application

Reno Mattress

Reno Mattresses are low profile baskets constructed of double twisted hexagonal woven galvanized steel wire with internal diaphragms that create compartments or cells.

The compartment or cells are of equal dimensions and spacing to provide even distribution of the stone fill throughout the mattress even after structural movement. Even distribution of the stone fill ensures that the mattress maintains intimate contact with the foundation soil.
