What is GCL?
GCL(Geosynthetic Clay Liner)is a needlepunched reinforced comprised of a uniform layer of granular sodium bentonite encapsulated between a woven and nonwoven geotextile attached to a geomembrane. It combines the dimensional stability and increased internal shear strength of reinforced geotextiles with the high swelling capacity and low permeability of sodium bentonite, these geosynthetic clay liners have a high sealing effect and outstanding mechanical properties that can be used on steep slopes and in high-load applications where increased internal shear strength is required.
What are Features and Benefits?
- Low Permeability: Bentonite’s ability to swell ensures a low permeability barrier, effectively preventing liquid seepage.
- Self-healing: Bentonite’s self-healing properties allow the GCL to seal punctures or minor damage, maintaining its integrity as a barrier.
- Flexibility: GCLs can conform to ground movements and settlements, making them suitable for various terrains and conditions.
- Ease of Installation: GCLs are lighter, easier, and quicker to install compared to compacted clay liners, requiring less specialized equipment and labor.
- Environmentally Friendly: GCLs are made from natural materials, making them an environmentally friendly option for projects that require containment.
What are the Application of GCL?
- Landfills: Used as liners and caps to prevent leachate and contaminants from entering the groundwater.
- Containment Ponds: Liners for ponds storing wastewater, chemicals, or other hazardous liquids.
- Waterproofing: Barrier for foundations, basements, and tunnels to prevent water from getting in.
- Mining: Liners for heap leach pads, preventing contaminated leachate from polluting the environment.
- Water Conservation: Liners in canals and reservoirs to minimize water loss through seepage.
